After completing his law degree at the University of Alberta he articled with Alberta Justice at the Crown Prosecutor’s Office in Edmonton. He then moved to the defense bar and joined Edmonton’s pre-eminent criminal defense firm headed by Alex Pringle Q.C. Since that time he has run hundreds of trials in Provincial Court and in the Court of Queen’s Bench. He has successfully defended clients charged with murder, commercial fraud, sexual assault, drug trafficking, computer and technological crimes and other serious offenses.
In addition to his extensive trial practice, Mr. MacDonald does appeal work at every level of court in Alberta and in the Supreme Court of Canada.
Education has always been an important part of Mr. MacDonald’s professional life. He has given presentations on the Criminal Law to a variety of groups including high school students, law students, legal secretaries, lawyers and the Provincial Court Judges’ Association. From 2002 to 2005 he taught Criminal Law at Grant MacEwan Community College. He regularly talks about the court system to students at St. Francis Xavier High School. He has been an instructor at the Bar Admission Course (CPLED) in Criminal Law and Advocacy since 2000. Mr. MacDonald served on the Board of Directors of the Edmonton Social Planning Council from 1996 until the spring of 2000. He was President of that social advocacy group from 1997 onward. Since 1996, he has served many hours as a volunteer member and/or Chair of Legal Aid Alberta’s Edmonton Regional, Northern Appeals and Complex Case Committees. He is currently in his second year on Legal Aid Alberta’s Board of Directors.
Mr. MacDonald realizes that being charged with a criminal offense is terrible event which causes great personal and financial stress. His view is that you as a client require clear-headed advice about the law so that you fully understand your position within the legal system. His task is to minimize the effect the criminal process has on your life and to represent your rights and interests before the courts with integrity, clarity, and skill.
If you have a criminal matter which requires careful, professional consideration, Kirk MacDonald invites you to contact him to discuss your situation.
